The book depicts the history of Thailand's sex industry including various issues (socio - cultural - political) associated with it. The author shows the dichotomy of Buddhist temples and statues in one hand and brothel and night clubs on the other. The pivotal role of World War II behind the growth of the flesh trade comes naturally in this regard. The author identifies the root cause that propels ...the underprivileged girls to enter the industry from local and outside. The issue of HIV, role of NGOs and different international bodies towards Thailand have been explained elaborately. The book ends with the Thai governmental policies and initiatives towards the trade that has been criminalising since 1960 still serves as the backbone of the nation's economy.
Dr. Ananya Guha Roy is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Nakshalbari College, Darjeeling, West Bengal. She has teaching experience of more than 19 years at UG & PG Level in different colleges of West Bengal. She has been awarded Ph. D Degree in Political Science by University of North Bengal. Her area of research is “Human Rights Violation”. She obtained her Post Graduation & M.Phil Degree in ‘International Relations’ from Jadavpur University, West Bengal. She has presented 25 research papers in different interdisciplinary areas of Social Science in different National and International seminars. She has authored 3 books and 25 research papers in National and International journals of repute. She is associated with various regional and national level social organizations working for underprivileged sections of the society. She is a life member of West Bengal Political Science Association and Indian Political Science Association.
