The genesis of this book lies in the desire to document a story that is both historic and profoundly human—the story of how sports at Aligarh Muslim University evolved from scattered, enthusiastic pursuits into a deeply embedded institutional culture. The Games Committee, in particular, has shaped generations of students through fitness, discipline, camaraderie, and leadership. My association with the University Games Committee, spanning more than 4 decades, has been marked by deep engagement, enrichment, and enduring pride. Over these years, I have not merely observed its journey but lived it—sharing its triumps, learning from its challenges, and drawing inspiration from the values it has consistently upheld. This long and intimate association has given me far more than memories; it has instilled in me a profound sense of love, loyalty, and respect for this venerable institution. Over time, I became increasingly aware that the Committee’s rich legacy—its records, photographs, documents, and personal recollections—was quitely fading into obscurity, gradually succumbing to neglect and the passage of time. To witness such invaluable historical evidence and institutional memory, forgotten under layers of dust, was deeply unsettling. These were not mere artefacts; they were living testimonies to generations of commitment, discipline, and sporting excellence.... It was this realisation that compelled me to act. With whatever means, access, and understanding I possessed, I felt it my duty to gather, preserve, and present these materials so that they may continue to speak to future generations. This effort is not driven by personal ambition or recognition, but by a sincere sense of responsibility—an attempt to safeguard a legacy that rightly belongs to the institution and its people. This work, therefore, should be seen as a humble offering, a gesture of gratitude, and a small measure of repayment to an institution that has given me so much. If it rekindles interest, inspires respect, or preserves even a fragment of the University Games Committee’s remarkable heritage, I shall consider my effort truly rewarded. As the University celebrates significant milestones in its sports administration, it is essential to compile its origins, transformations, and contributions into a single comprehensive volume. This book is not merely a historical record; it is a tribute to the visionaries, teachers, administrators, coaches, and countless students whose passion sustained and strengthened this movement. The writing process was enriched through consultations with scattered records, Annual Reports, Books, Magazines, old souvenirs, former Secretaries, Presidents, Directors, Memoires, Personal Dairies, and numerous custodians of AMU’s athletic legacy. Their memories, documents, and insights form the backbone of this narrative. I hope this work inspires future generations to preserve this vibrant heritage while boldly shaping the next era of sports at AMU. Prof. F. S.
